About the Item

Copacabana presents Erté's vision of fantasy, splendor, and femininity in a statuesque model wearing a cabaret costume. The gown is noted for its luxuriant richness and design. Softened contours create the folds in the drapery, forming a magnificent train of bows which seductively begins around her breasts and neck, framing her head and continues down her back. The bows are delicately illuminated with white gold leaf and pastel colors indicative of Art Deco. The Copacabana (also referred to as "The Copa") is a famous New York nightclub. Opening on November 10, 1940 at 10 East 60th Street, "The Copa" was a springboard to fame for many of the talented and beautiful Copa dancers such as June Allyson, Lucille Bremer, Janice Rule, Joanne Dru, Janis Paige, and Julie Wilson. The club offered first-class entertainment, a full-course dinner, music, dancing, and libations. The Copa dancers or "Samba Sirens" offered glamour and allure in their dazzling, colorful costumes. Catalogue - Erté: The Last Works (Dutton, pgs. 173, 206). From the total edition of 462; numbered XXXVIII/L (there were also 375 Arabic and 37 AP). The bronze sculpture/casting medium and process is, and has always played, a fascinating part in the history of art, admired by civilization for thousands of years and continuously developed with modern technology.
